Tune of the Week // Roe – Patient.Wasted.Thinking

Roe’s track ‘Patient.Wasted.Thinking’ has been knocking around for a bit now and I’ve been delighted to played on The London Ear. Now, we’ve got a video for it!

Roe is a 19 year old from Derry who makes, what she describes as, ‘Grumpy Electro Pop’ with some drum machines, gorgeous synth sounds and her trusty strat.

The production on Patient.Wasted.Thinking features lovely instrument placement in your headphones. The grumbly bass sound is pure heaven and is counterbalanced beautifully by the clean sounding strat. The track beautifully builds to a huge electro pop soundscape before dropping back to a vocals and guitar conclusion.

Visually and sonically Roe seems to have a clear idea of where she sit in current music. Her newly released video for Patient.Wasted.Thinking fits perfectly with its aesthetic.

Roe managed to grab a BBC Introducing spot at Glastonbury last year as well as playing at Other Voices, The Great Escape, and earlier this year played at Eurosonic. Going on that alone, the future is looking bright.

Tune of the Week // Old Hannah – Follow

I’m going to hold my hands up. I don’t know anything of Old Hannah’s back catalogue.

Tune of the Week // Old Hannah – Follow

The band, Anthony Mannion, Lucie Crichlow, Luke Mercer and Leo Morris have been playing together since 2013 and have released a couple of EPs. Old Hannah have also opened for people like Lisa Hannigan and Sheryl Crow. I don’t know what these sound like.

All I know is that ‘Borealis’ is their forthcoming album from which ‘Follow’ is taken and it’s a lot different to their earlier material.

Follow is a very special song. Lucie Crichlow’s vocals entice you into the story of ‘Follow’, as it builds to the refrain. Once we get to the refrain we’re treated to harmonies Fleetwood Mac would be proud of. Musicianship and production on the track are a gift for the ears and envelop the listener in almost four minutes of bliss. Plus, I’m a sucker for a banjo.

If this is very different to previously released material, the band are most definitely on the right path. May it be a long a fruitful journey.

The band will have a launch party for ‘Follow’ on March 15th in The Grand Social in Dublin.

You can find out more about Old Hannah on their website, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

Tune of The Week // All The Luck in The World – Landmarks

I’ve been meaning to write about this track for a while. It’s a month since I first heard it and it just keeps growing on me.

Wicklow’s loss has been Berlin’s gain. Irishmen Neil Foot, Ben Connolly and Kelvin Barr are the three behind All The Luck in the World and are currently based in the German city.

The band combine intricate layered arrangements, musicianship and vocals to produce a track that is truly stunning. There’s something about hearing string noise in music. It’s real but the added harmonic makes it all magical.

Landmarks is the the follow up to Golden October and taken from their forthcoming album ‘A Blind Arcade’ which is set for release on February 2018.

Tune of the Week // Jon Dots – Happy Christmas Baby from Me

Ah Jon Dots, where have you been all my life? This week’s Tune of the Week comes from the aforementioned Jon Dots, a Dublin based artist who has reignited the classic Christmas song. ‘Happy Christmas Baby from Me’ will wrap you in its arms and fill your heart with warmth, like a great mug of mulled wine. But, as with real life Christmas, the track is tinged with the sadness of a lost love.

Mr Dots has been a busy boy in 2017 (Please excuse me, I’m late to the party), releasing twelve tracks in the year. What’s even better is that the entire back catalogue is available on Bandcamp on a Name Your Price basis!

While ‘Happy Christmas Baby from Me’ echoes classic sounds from the seventies, the rest of Dotts’ catalogue shows a much more diverse and contemporary artist. If you’ve only got 20 minutes, check out the Impossibly EP from July for Dotts’ diversity.

This is such a gorgeous song, the closest I can come up with is “A Christmas ‘ I love you Honeybear”. Magic.
