  • Follow Friday?

If you’re on Twitter, you’re sure to have come across Follow Friday or #FF.

Follow Friday seems to have started as a nice way to recommend people you find interesting to your ‘followers’.

At this stage though, I’m not sure if it works anymore. I understand that its a nice tip of the hat to people, who’s tweets you enjoy reading but now people in general are savvy with how twitter works and can find interesting people pretty easily.

Applications like Tweetdeck have made it a lot easier to follow more people and still keep up with your favourites.

What happens every Friday now, is there is a stream of tweets that are tagged #FF and to be perfectly honest, I ignore them.

I like Twitter but the constant stream of #FF on a Friday makes me stay away until the day is nearly done. The faux obligatory #FF tweets tend to make me cringe which are simply lists of usernames.

How many if these people do we actually know? In the real world how many would you say to friends ‘yeah he’s a good bloke, be his friend’.

Twitter is no doubt a great social media tool, a networking device. I think Follow Friday was developed to give Twitter a more personal touch. I’m not sure it entirely worked.

  • Social Media to the Rescue

    facebook

Last night myself and a college buddy were chatting outside our beloved school of intellectual enlightenment. It was getting late and we said our farewells.

I turned towards the pedestrian lights to cross the road and spotted a wallet on the ground in front of me. I looked around to see if the owner was near but there was no one around. I checked inside, saw a name, bank cards and some cash. Why do we never put our own number in our wallet?

I saw the owner was a student but not in our college.. I’d just have to left a message at their college reception for them.

I got home, had another look to see if there was an address or a number and decided to tweet if anyone knew the person. I then went to Facebook and did a search for the person.

I found both them and their boyfriend, sent a message and got a reply a couple of hours later. I had also got two replies from Twitter, with contact details for the person.

The wallet was returned to the owner 14 hours after I found the wallet.

    Yay for social media!

  • nessymon

My real name is Vanessa Monaghan – everyone calls me nessy

So its not hard to see where nessymon came from

As in nessymon.wordpress.com I’ve decided to change my twitter name to @nessymon and I’ve changed my facebook to facebook.com/nessymon

Over the next few weeks nessymon.com should be up and running too…

Reason? Once upon a time a friend/lecturer said that if you could find a unique name on the internet that was a good thing… When I google NessyProductions you get a couple of Nessyproductions from around the world. I’m still going to use NessyProductions.eu for work but for personal stuff and building up a personal online presence nessymon.com is a great option.

When I google nessymon – everything that comes up is weirdly strangely and ego boostingly referring to me..

    🙂 …nessy out!

  • Twitter is twattered!

twitterSo Twitter is twattered! I have to say I feel completely lost. Some nice people try to invade our virtual world and we’re left stranded on our spacehoppers looking at the good guys trying to defend planet Twitter.

It was only yesterday that reports were swirling around that under 24s thought it wasn’t cool to be part of social media networks. I fit into the over 24 category.

Last week I deleted my Myspace and Bebo accounts. There’s not really any point in having more than Facebook and Twitter really.

MySpaceWhen Myspace came along, it was about how many ‘friends’ you had and how many page views you had. Now, it seems to me anyway, its more important to have a circle of contacts that you actually communicate with and interact with.

beboI’m still surprised at how many bands still use Myspace. For the under 24s, no actually under 18s, Bebo and Myspace provide a good way of keeping in touch with the kids. Is it because it’s free? The nice people here at wordpress provide a decent free blogging world.

Myspace provides facilities for blogging, friend updates, photos but I think the biggest letdown has been that while you can customise your page, you still really are stuck to ‘their’ format.

facebookSaying that while Facebook provides space for ‘what you’re doing’ and Twitter has brought that to a more simple 140 character micro blogging format more .com or ‘proper websites’ are taking a more blog like form.

Westlife.com is a great example of this. While the website provides all the information it needs to, it gives members the ability to comment on each piece of information. So in reality westlife.com has started its own social media network as their fans interact with each other here rather than on a Myspace, Facebook or other facility.

wordpress2I’m actually thinking of utilizing a blog form of website and transferring this blog to it. Searching through blogrolls it seems that while people are happy to use a blog form and allow others to directly comment on their content, they still like to have theirdomainname.com while being powered by WordPress.

It is completely coincidental that this blog is wordpress hosted and powered 🙂

I missed the news on Twitter today. It keeps me up to date with all the news headlines from The Guardian. (Speaking of which don’t let The Observer close – check my page on web effecting newspapers).

So while there was no twitter today a number of things cropped up that I would have mentioned:

Nice guy asked if I needed help with shopping and my on crutches. First in 12 weeks

HHMM! Martina McBride playing tonight in Citywest hotel last time I saw her in the Point with Garth Brooks

Facebook isn’t as spontanious is it?

Go Giants Good win last night! #mlb #sfgiants

Hopefully it will be back tomorrow
