The London Ear // Show 286 with Video Blue

Episode 286 of The London Ear, the fourth show of my lockdown.

    Interview with Video Blue

It was a pleasure to finally catch up with Video Blue, aka Jim O’Donoghue Martin, on The London Ear and chat about his new album ‘Night Painting’.

These are definitely unprecedented times, so while I was chatting to Jim in South East London, he was self isolating in County Wexford.

Jim is a lovely guy, I know him years at this stage and it’s amazing to see how his talent is growing and flourishing with every release.

You can find out more about Video Blue on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. You can stream ‘Night Painting’ on Spotify.

Buy ‘Night Painting’ from Video Blue on Bandcamp.

August is a weird kinda month here in London. Schools are off, lots of people are on holidays and out of town meaning commuting is a bit easier but then you also get lots of lots of tourists everywhere. Just like us, if we were off on our holibobs somewhere foreign.

So, I thought this was the perfect time to try something new out on The London Ear. A ‘soundtrack to someone’s life’ if you will. So I asked Jim O’Donoghue Martin, aka Video Blue, if he would like to choose the music on this week’s episode and then tell us why.

I truly was delighted with how this went. Thanks to Jim for so many things for this week’s episode. For being thoughtful and insightful, for being charming and so easy to get along to and also thanks for telling us about how ‘reviver’ came about.

‘reviver’ is a new ambient recording from Video Blue, ‘made in response to my own dealings with anxiety and panic attacks. When overwhelmed, listening to and creating sound helps’

Thank you so much for sharing.

You can find Video Blue on his website, on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram.  You can buy Reviver on Bandcamp and you can also listen on YouTube

The London Ear - Neil Weatherall (writer/director)
Temperatures are more down to what I can handle this week in London. Hurrah! It’s been raining though and I’ve spent the week surrounded by Irish people so it feels a bit like Ireland.

Highlight of the week for me was meeting my favourite film director, Baz Luhrmann, completely by chance in St Pancras Train station. I still haven’t stopped smiling.

Interview with Neil Weatherall – Writer/Director of The Passion of The Playboy Riots

On this week’s show I chat to Neil Weatherall about his play, The Passion of The Playboy Riots. Complete transparency here. I saw this play on Thursday night. You can read about it here. This was after I spoke to Neil about the play.

Video Blue on The London Ear

Show 149 of The London Ear, I was delighted to have been contacted by Jody from Bokito with their new track, ‘Better at Getting Worse’. There are two Irish guys in the London based band and their track was perfect to kick off the show.

    Interview with Video Blue

It’s great to know that a guest from Show 1 of The London Ear is still making music. Then, Jim O’Donoghue Martin was a member of Bold Things. Now, he’s combines jangly guitars and electronica. He’s just released his debut album ‘Love Scenes’, which was recorded in his bedroom in Hackney. It really is worth your time.

You can find Video Blue on his website, on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and you can buy the album on Bandcamp
