Newton Faulkner: Live at Whelan’s, Dublin Review

On Sunday night (May 27th), I had the pleasure of going to see Newton Faulkner in a very sticky Whelan’s and being jammed it also meant you got to know your neighbours a little bit better than you intended to. Newton played some tracks from his forthcoming album, ‘Write it on your Skin’, alongside some more familiar tunes. Highlight of the night for me was ‘Clouds’ and the fantastic sing along that happened. Read all about it on Goldenplec.

Here’s the studio version of Clouds:

  • Dionne Warwick: Live at Vicar St Dublin Review

Dionne Warwick: Live at Vicar St Dublin Review

It’s not every day you get to see a living legend perform, then again, there aren’t that many around that are actually deserving of the title. Dionne Warwick is one who is. Five Grammy awards, fifty something singles in the charts and now celebrating her fiftieth year in showbusiness. On May 24th, Ms Warwick took to the stage, looking a little different than we are used to seeing her, with her hair cropped short showing it’s natural grey. It took a while for her voice to warm up but when it did, well there’s no one like her.

  • The Saw Doctors: Indian Summer Review

The Saw Doctors: Indian Summer Review

Saw Doctors Indian SummerThe institution that is known as The Saw Doctors, always seem to have a story for every occasion. Following their Christmas smash, Downtown, with Petula Clark where they came close to swiping the Christmas Number One from The Cowell Factor, they return with Indian Summer.

You know what you’re going to get with The Saw Doctors, they’ve created a genre of music just for themselves. This mid tempo track features some subtle string arrangements which lift the track beautifully. Again as with their previous releases, the observations and story telling that The Saw Doctors manage to capture in musical form is something quite unique to them.

This is a re-release but if we do happen to get some good weather in our little rock, this could be the soundtrack to the summer.

  • The Shoos: Say Something Review

    The Shoos: Say Something Review

TheShoos‘Say Something’ is the new single from The Shoos and is released on their own label ‘The Shoos Records’. It’s a brave move for the band as they were with Universal in Ireland for a spell and also headed to the U.S. last year as big money and investment was about to come their way.

‘Say Something’ lyrically gives a glimpse into what happened at the time describing it as ‘all we heard was yes.’ The track builds nicely to the chorus and lead singer, Tex’s raspy vocals, make it seem that this is a new step forward for the band, such is the belief and the passion. The track was recorded live and was mixed by Joe Zook who has also worked with Modest Mouse, One Republic and Katy Perry.

‘Say Something’ is a grower but once you hear it a couple of times, you’ll be singing along. This is a really good platform for The Shoos to re-establish themselves, their way. Fair play, their hearts are on their sleeves.
