  • The Last Tycoons: Speed Review

The opening notes of Speed are somewhat Britpop reminiscent. This is quickly cast to one side as Speed kicks into a classic Rock’n’Roll/Americana vibe.

Steve Fanning’s vocals along with the production and organ lines throughout the track will obviously be linked to a ‘The Doors’ influence, since when was that a bad thing?

It’s an upbeat uptempo track that screams for a Summer Road Trip and a night time gig to follow it. Listening to this makes me want to see these guys live.

Speed is taken from The Last Tycoon’s debut album, out now.

  • Aoife Cleary: Us and The U.S. Review

    aoife cleary

Who is Aoife Cleary and why haven’t heard of her before?

Once part of all girl group The Blonde Majority, Aoife is about to release her debut single ‘Us and The U.S.’.

A cracking uptempo electronic rock song, Aoife Cleary has just done her bit to prove female singer songwriters don’t have to be sitting in their bedroom strumming their guitar just ever so gently.

For some reason, Aoife’s voice reminds me slightly of Karen from Cowboy X and being honest, Aoife’s musical style is in roughly the same ballpark.

Production on the track is good, clever guitar riffs, good bassline and harmonies that aren’t overdone, they’re just right. The chorus is catchy and there’s a nice little breakdown just over halfway in the track. Catchy as hell, radio friendly, this track should be all over your transistor soon!

  • The Frank and Walters: The Parson Review

    Frank and Walters

There’s something about The Frank and Walters, you may never have heard the song before but you just know its them. That’s what ‘The Parson’ was like for this writer. Maybe its the clever basslines, the jangly guitar sound, the muted snare drum? Maybe its all that and more.

‘The Parson’ is the first of four single that The Frank and Walters will release this year to coincide with the changing of the seasons. Representing Spring, The Parson is a catchy tune, with lyrics that tell quite a visual story of the ‘village and villagers’.

So this is the first of four? If this is Spring, Summer is going to be fantastic! The official campaign starts here: The Franks & Walters for my Summer soundtrack!

The Franks, you have been away too long!

  • Killian McGrath: Shine On Review

    killian mcgrath
Shine On is the debut single from Irish singer/songwriter Killian McGrath which will be released in May 2010.

It’s a piano/guitar/vocal lead track. First thing I notice is how Killian’s raspy edged voice seems older than he is. ‘Shine On’ has a nice build up and production on the track allows everything to breathe withing its own space.

About halfway through the track, some beautifully arranged strings and vocal harmonies take the song to another level, before a full band sound kicks in. Maybe this could have happened a little earlier.

Lyrically, ‘Shine On’ seems to be a tale of moving on from one situation to another. Again, McGrath’s words make him seem older than his years.

It’s a very good debut and it will be interesting to see what the future holds for McGrath.
