Spector: Live in Whelan’s, Dublin (Video)

I’ve been looking forward to seeing Spector for a while. I enjoy their pop indie sound, their energy and their attitude, plus Fred McPherson is a pop/rock star we’ve been waiting a while for and he proved he had the showmanship to take this onto the stage.

Clever witty banter, musically sound, the band shone. Something weird happened during the gig though and it’s harder for me to write about this as I know one of the people involved. A local radio station in Dublin changed the lyrics for ‘Chevy Thunder’ to Hairy Panda and someone I know made a video for it and put it on Youtube. When I interviewed Chris from Spector, he hadn’t heard about it and googled it as we were chatting. (sound bloke by the way).

During the night pieces of paper with the words ‘Hairy Panda’ were handed out and the two people ended up on stage, which was weird. Unfortunately, only some of the audience knew what ‘Hairy Panda’ was about and changing the lyrics for their biggest song was a bit of a ‘fail’ for Spector.

To be honest, this left an unsavoury taste in my mouth and it was a tad embarrassing. Both Chris and Jed from the band weren’t particularly happy about it afterwards and Fred apologized for the incident on Twitter.

I really enjoyed the band’s performance though and I look forward to seeing them without a stage invasion.

Competition: Win Tickets to An Inspector Calls at The Gaiety

Competition time, I’ve got a pair of tickets to An Inspector Calls in The Gaiety on Thursday June 7th. This production is back for a limited run in The Gaiety and is directed by Stephen Daldry, who also directed the movies, The Hours and The Reader and Billy Elliot.

This is the winner of 19 major awards, winning more than any other play ever and to be honest, I’m not surprised, I saw it the last time it was here. They use a fantastic set and use the stage brilliantly for the entirety of the play. It’s visually quite stunning.

What’s it about.. ‘When Inspector Goole arrives unexpectedly at the prosperous Birling family home, their peaceful dinner party is shattered by his investigations into the death of a young woman. His startling revelations shake the very foundations of their lives and challenge us all to examine our consciences.’ You can get ticket information here.

To be in with a chance of winning all you have to do is make sure you like my Facebook page and leave a comment below, telling me if you were a Detective, what would your name be. It’s all a bit of fun, winner will be selected at random. Competition closes on Tuesday 5th June at 7pm.

    Bon Chance!

Tune of the Week 01/06/2011: Little Comets

I’ve a bit if a soft spot for Little Comets, I interviewed Rob for Goldenplec, while the band were driving in their van in February of last year. Their album ‘In Search of the Elusive Little Comets’ became part of my soundtrack to Summer 2011. Since then the four piece have become a three piece but are back with as much gusto as ever, They have a new EP ‘Jennifer and Other Short Stories’, which came out on Monday. The band will also embark on their biggest UK tour yet in October this year. This week’s Tune of the Week is title track ‘Jennifer’.

Newton Faulkner: Live at Whelan’s, Dublin Review

On Sunday night (May 27th), I had the pleasure of going to see Newton Faulkner in a very sticky Whelan’s and being jammed it also meant you got to know your neighbours a little bit better than you intended to. Newton played some tracks from his forthcoming album, ‘Write it on your Skin’, alongside some more familiar tunes. Highlight of the night for me was ‘Clouds’ and the fantastic sing along that happened. Read all about it on Goldenplec.

Here’s the studio version of Clouds:
