The London Ear on RTE 2XM // Show 199 with Clare Joy Langford and James Hendicott

The London Ear on RTÉ 2XM // Show 199

Woah! What a busy show this week! I was delighted to be joined by not one, but two awesome guests, Clare Joy Longford and James Hendicott.

Interview with Clare Joy Langford, actor and producer of For King and Country

    For King and Country

Clare Joy Longford is an actor and producer and is currently producing a play with the Dilated Theatre Company entitled ‘For King and Country.

It’s a court room drama which follows a Private Hemps’s desertion of World War I after three years on the frontline. Those found guilty of desertion were handed a death sentence. This follows the soldier’s PTSD, or what was then called ‘shell shock’ and the tribulations his defending officer had trying to ensure Private Hemp was acquitted.

The play was originally perfomed as ‘Hamp’ at the Edinburgh Festival in 1964. The cast included Leonard Rossiter, John Hurt and Richard Briers. It was then adapted into the BAFTA-nominated film King and Country.

For King and Country runs at the Southwark Playhouse from June 28 – July 21st. You can get tickets here.

You can find out more about Dilated Theatre on their website.

Interview with James Hendicott, author of ‘Football for the Forgotten’

    James Hendicott

James Hendicott is a Dublin based writer and journalist and was in London at the CONIFA World Football Cup and is writing a book about it.

From their website CONIFA describe themselves as “CONIFA, the Confederation of Independent Football Associations, is the football federation for all associations outside FIFA. It’s a global acting non-profit organization that supports representatives of international football teams from nations, de-facto nations, regions, minority peoples and sports isolated territories”.

James has been interested in what has been happening with CONIFA and was in London researching and chatting to the team for his new book ‘Football for the Forgotten’.

The London Ear on RTÉ 2XM // Show 198 with Toby Bourke

I remember going into The Record Sleeve in Navan, Co. Meath and asking them to order me ‘Waltz Away Dreaming’ by Toby Bourke, which featured George Michael. It took a few tries before they got it but the gorgeous burnt orange slipcase and artwork of Flaming June by Sir Frederic Leighton was well worth the wait. Plus, the music was great. Little did I think that years later, I would have the opportunity to chat to Toby Bourke on my radio show. That’s what I did on this week’s episode of The London Ear.

Toby Bourke - Blood Sweat and TearsDublin born Toby has just re-released his album ‘Blood, Sweat and Tears’ which was recorded live at The Swan at Stockwell. The title track is a London Irish immigrant song and still rings true. We also spoke about the accident which almost ended Toby’s musical endeavours.

I was delighted to be able to chat to Toby, to find out more about him and his music and life. Collaborating with George Michael, would have been an immense occasion for any artist but it’s not the main thing to define a person. I’m glad that I, for one, have a more rounded knowledge of Toby and his work.

You can find about more about Toby on his website, Twitter and Facebook.

You can stream Blood Sweat and Tears on Spotify here.
