The London Ear: Interviews with It’s Just Cat + Rodney Cromwell

Saturday means The London Ear, two new guests, a voice note from this week’s Sound of The Underground, and a bag of records for me to share with you today. It’s Just Cat and Rodney Cromwell join me for chats on today’s show.

    From The Vault: Director

This week’s Irish track From The Vault comes from Director. Taken from their album “I’ll Wait For Sound”, I played the opener, “Play Pretend”. It’s such a shame these guys aren’t together anymore.

Sound of The Underground: Yama Warashi

Every week on The London Ear, I introduce you to a London-based artist who you may be hearing for the first time in a little segment I call ‘Sound Of The Underground’. This week, I was thrilled to be able to share the brand new track from Yoshina Shighara who makes music under the moniker Yama Warashi.

‘Saku Saku’ is taken from the forthcoming album ‘Crispy Moon’ and is available to preorder as a Dinked Edition. Yummy stuff if you can get your mitts on one!

Do check Yoshino’s visual art also!

    Interview with It’s Just Cat

It’s Just Cat and Nessy chatting

It’s Just Cat is an Irish artist about whom I heard many, many positive things over the past while. She’s just released a new single ‘not a vibe’ and it was a great opportunity to chat about that and lots of other stuff besides.

Cat is truly inspirational and a fantastic role model to show people how they can live their authentic selves, cultivating a space where people can be without being judged.

I really enjoyed getting to know Cat and I will definitely keep an eye on her music. ‘Not a vibe’ is a complete bop, a great earworm and will make you want to dance. Job done!

Adam Cresswell, aka Rodney Cromwell, has just released his second album ‘Memory Box’. He is an electronic artist based in South East London who also happens to run a record label, Happy Robots. I’ve previously played the New Order-tinged single ‘Opus Three’ on The London Ear.

It was great to finally catch up with him to chat about the record, his experiences of running a label, keeping his musical journey alive and of course, giving Catford a well-deserved shout-out.

Memory Box is released on Happy Robots Records. You can find out more here and purchase some music on Bandcamp.

The London Ear #374 with Wallis Bird

The London Ear 374 with Wallis Bird

It was an absolute honour to speak to Wallis Bird on this episode of The London Ear. If this is the first you’ve heard of Wallis, here’s a quick intro. Wallis is an Irish Berlin based singer-songwriter who is about to release her seventh studio album. The album will be entitled ‘Hands – Nine and a half songs for nine and a half fingers’. She has just released the first two tracks from the album and I was delighted to chat to her about that.

Wallis encompasses what, for me, it is to be an artist. Hell, if I was a musician, Wallis would be who I would want to be! Cheeky, clever meaningful lyrics, a beautiful delivery and she knows how to funk it up. When the tempo rises, everything else is brought to a higher level.

I really enjoyed speaking to Wallis about the process of how her new album came about. Not only that, I haven’t heard many artists mention the tax payers. What? Yes, when artists were given grants from governments during Covid, these are ultimately coming from the tax payer. It was a refreshing attitude to have, especially when Wallis said that she didn’t want to let those tax payers down. Kudos.

There are so many more nuggets and gems in here, we get to find out about how Wallis, the artist, thinks and I truly appreciate her being so open with me on the program.

You can find out more about Wallis on her website: WallisBird.com

The London Ear on RTÉ 2XM #373

Hello! #373 of The London Ear on RTÉ 2XM gives me the opportunity to play a full hour of brand new Irish music. 2022 is looking like continuing on with the fine vintage of Irish music that 2020 and 2021 have produced.

It’s always a pleasure to play music from artists I already know and to give a platform to those I’m playing for the first time. Hope you all enjoy(ed) this week’s programme.
