Nessy Recommends // Shura: religion (u can lay your hands on me)

It’s three months since Shura gave us BKLYNLDN and a glimpse into what direction her long awaited second album would take. The build up to the release of ‘Forevher’ has just take a major leap forward and has made Shura a queer queen for our times.

I’ve loved Shura’s music since I first heard it. She beautifully mixes an eighties electronic vibe with today’s contemporary world for someone special. ‘religion’ though, this is something on a different level.

Being the George Michael fan I am, the very first bars of ‘religion’ instantly reminded me of ‘I Want Your Sex’. That reaction was pretty spot on.

‘religion’ tells the story of a long distance relationship and to be totally honest, it’s so fcuking refreshing to a queer anthem about wanting to get it on with your new love. This new chapter of Shura’s music seems, so far, to show an extra freedom and a serious danceability. Catchy hooks, and a new lady love anthem. And that’s before we even get to the video.

Once upon a time, Madonna was thee gay icon. Remember ‘Like a Prayer’? Burning crosses, sexy moving statues and Madonna flirting with possibly a black female God. Biggest shock of all, I kissed a boy at a school disco when this was on. ALL of that is well in the past.

Step forward Shura, who on Facebook described herself as ‘your friendly neighbourhood vaping lesbian Pope’. Dancing nuns in empty swimming pools, kissing and smoking and Pope herself, Shura performing a nun wedding. Directed by Chloe Wall, this is pure brillance. Totally irreverent, I love it, your Grandmother will probably hate it, which obviously means Shura is doing something right.

I have listened to this over and over and I’m disappointed every time the track ends. Stick it on your next Spotify playlist.

Shura’s album ‘Forevher’ is released on August 20th on Secretly Canadian. You can preorder on her website. She’s also hitting the road, you can get full tour dates and tickets here.

Now, put your headphones on and crank up the volume.

Nessy Recommends // lullahush – If Spring Had A Spare Room I’d Rent It With You

This track definitely has won the best track title of the year. lullahush’s debut track, ‘If Spring Had A Spare Room I’d Rent It With You’ is a dreamy, whimsical composition, which starts with jittery vocal layers which build in waves. The production seems deceptively sparse. Stick some headphones on and it’s beautifully rounded in its own bubble.

lullashush has recently signed a worldwide publishing deal with BDi publishing and has previously written with artists such as AE Mak and Elkin. lullahush was also chosen to attend the Red Bull Academy in Berlin. Getting to do that is a hell of a hard job.

lullashush’s ditty is the electronic version of emo.

According to the blurb the track was inspired by a Raymond Carver poem called ‘Morning, Thinking of Empire’. “For me it articulates this idea of small love – the simple connection of everyday relationships that make up life. Spring is like this. It’s not boisterous or over the top, it’s got just the right amount of hope. The song kind of looks at Winter as a sadness that Spring offers an escape from, and how if we could just get from one to the other we’d be ok.” Cheers Mr. lullahush!

Have a look at the video, I can’t help but think how frozen they are by the end!

Nessy Recommends // Little Comets – American Tuna

I actually don’t know how long I’ve been a fan of Little Comets, I think it must be about eight or nine years at this stage. I’ve had the opportunity to interview the band a few times and have always found both their music and their personalities infectious. Their first album ‘In Search of The Elusive Little Comets’ had me hooked!

Their latest release ‘American Tuna’ is no different. The band are lyrical masters, witty, funny and a turn of phrase that would leave published authors envious. Their upbeat, positive spin in their music can’t help but leave you feel better. They really should be prescribed as the ultimate anti-depressant.

The video for the ‘American Tuna’ is very clever. The lads sneaked into Sheffield Hallam University and hogged the lifts for a few hours.

This is the second Little Comets release in a month, following up on The Sneeze. Seeing as they’ve also announced a UK tour for the end of the year, I’m hoping this means a new full length record is on the way.

    I just love this band.

Nessy Recommends // Ben Garrett – Falling

I absolutely fell in love with ‘Falling’ as soon as I heard it.

Ben Garrett is a Dublin multi instrumentalist who has just released his first solo single ‘Falling’.

Ben was part of the much loved, ‘Overhead, The Albatross’ who went on hiatus in 2017. After eight years working solidly with the band, Ben decided to get a Mac and Ableton and delve into the ideas that he hadn’t shared for one reason or another. ‘Falling’ is one of those ideas.

It’s not his first venture since 2017 though. Last year, Ben teamed up with David Prendergast, also of O, TA and released a couple of singles and videos under the moniker, We Had Zillions. Check out Ben’s drumming on ‘Endless’.

Since then, Ben has played at the Cork Jazz Festival with the ever funky Zaska and also worked with Bold Puppy, scoring a pole dancing vid!

Back to Ben’s solo exploits. Ben’s style of music follows on from Overhead, The Albatross. If you haven’t heard of the band before, fans of Public Service Broadcasting are going to love this.

‘Falling’ is a beautiful piece of work. The track rises beautifully from a delicate start, both rhythmically and instrumentally, enabling you to get lost in a glorious sonic landscape. This makes the spoken words about looking after ‘the planet we got’ all the more poignant.

There is positivity with the words ‘I trust in humanity’ and this is echoed in the musicality of the track, giving a sense of hope. Not all is lost. This is a chance to reflect and do better and it is expressed fantastically by the music machine that is Ben Garrett.

This is a really enjoyable piece of music, I’m really looking forward to hearing what’s coming next.
