Nessy Recommends // Baba – Land Of The Damned

Baba’s ‘Land of the Damned’ is the follow up to the feisty ‘I, Defy’, which automatically set about Siobhan Lynch as being an artist on her terms.

Good music always seems like it’s easy, that’s the deception.  ‘Land of the Damned’ is a track which will deceive you. Put on your headphones, listen to it again. The layers of instrumentation and production are just so on point.  The bassline is to die for. Alongside the lyrics, they weave almost a gothic tapestry of  doomed love.

The track was written by Siobhan and was recorded and produced by Gavin Glass in Orphan Studios in Dublin.

2018 has shown Siobhan Lynch to be an original, strong writing and vision of where she wants to go. These, coupled with an instantly recognisable, timeless voice, give Baba the tools to stand head and shoulders above others.

There’s only one problem, I want to hear more music and I want to hear it now!

Nessy Recommends // Dreaming of Jupiter – Fading

Dreaming of Jupiter launched their Fading EP with a gig in Dublin’s Button Factory this week but not before unveiling the new video for the title track.

I’ve been privy to having this EP before it’s launch and let the 4 track opus delight my aural senses. Dreaming of Jupiter fit nicely in the ‘neo soul pop’ category  but I just file them under ‘fecking good music’. I have played ‘Right Kind of Love’ on The London Ear and was extremely impressed with the songwriting, musicality, energy and production and it’s one of my favourite songs of the year. Then, they come along with this.

Again, the band offer a masterclass in production and songwriting. The rumbling and fading synth bass line is to die for. Lyrically, the song points at a fading love but with a tempo change midway through, turns the event into a major positive. Plus there are not many acts who can seamlessly change from English to Spanish and back without seeming like they are trying too hard. For Dreaming of Jupiter, this sounds like the most natural thing in the world.

The colour palette for the video has been hinted at by the band across their socials for the past while, monochrome with a splash of colour. Directed by Matthew Megaman Russell, submersive ink drops and a life size canvas cleverly illustrate the anguish and, almost grief, of a lost love.

Dreaming of Jupiter know who they are, they know their sound and they know exactly how they want to portray themselves.  With this track, front woman, Zoë Gough, is front and centre, vocally and visually. These guys are ready to take the world on in 2019, I wouldn’t bet against them.

Nessy Recommends // Kormac ft. Jack O’Rourke – New Day

I had goosebumps go down my back the first time I saw the video for ‘New Day’. This is an amazing piece of work, from Kormac featuring Jack O’Rourke.

‘New Day’ is part of Three Ireland’s #MadeByThree series which facilitates collaborations between three artists. Here we have DJ and producer Kormac, singer songwriter and previous guest on The London Ear, Jack O’Rourke and visuals were provided by Will Armstrong.

The production on the track is addictive and hypnotic, Jack’s vocals are immense. I’m wondering how exactly he managed to sing so high. It’s the kind of track you can get lost in, giving just over three and a half minutes of blissful escapism.

Now, add Will Armstrong’s film. You can’t call it video, it’s much more than a throw away piece. On its own, Will’s work would be an outstanding short. Put all the pieces together and ‘New Day’ becomes very special indeed.

This is just perfect and deserves worldwide success.

Nessy Recommends // Nina Smith – Run Out

It’s always joy to find a new artist that you immediately like. Nina Smith is a singer songwriter from Nottingham and ‘Run Out’ is her current single.

Nina has previously opened for artists such as Belinda Carlise, Finley Quaye and Alicia Dixon and has worked on some BBC sessions recorded at the legendary Maida Vale studios.
Smith has been working with producer Yoad Nevo (Sia, Goldfrapp) and together they’ve come up with some magic on ‘Run Out’.

Smith’s vocals are quite soulful and her lyrics contemporary but production is reminiscent of Portishead or Massive Attack, giving a timeless quality to the track. It’s the type of track that may be a slow burner but listen to it a couple of times and the choral refrain will be running round your head. Dig a little deeper and you’ll find a rumbling bass sound to die for.

This is the first I’ve heard from Nina Smith and I’m really looking forward to hearing more. Her debut album ‘White Feather’ is due out in October this year.
