Nessy Recommends // Exiles – Rearview Mirror

Carlow duo, Exiles, are back after a year away with a new single ‘Rearview Mirror’ and you need to take notice.

While lyrically ‘Rearview Mirror’ deals with the aftermath of a breakup (shit for life but always brilliant for songs), the musicality of the synth and rhythm section offer optimism. There’s a fantastic retro synth wave vibe to this.

Working with producer, Michael Heffernan, Exiles have nailed it with ‘Rearview Mirror’. I think I’ve now listened to this about seventeen times in a row. Memorable singalong hooks counterbalanced by that beautiful bassy synth sound. That’s my heaven. They know exactly what works and the ebb and flow of verse and chorus tease you in.

Be prepared for Exiles to be on the crest of the synth wave in the not to distanced future. One problem with this track, it finishes too soon.

Exiles will launch Rearview Mirror at Whelan’s on Friday 22nd February 2019 at 8pm. Tickets available from wavtickets.ie.

Nessy Recommends // Thanks Brother – We Caught It

There are more than a couple of reasons for choosing Thanks Brother’s new single ‘We Caught It’ as a Nessy Recommends.

First off this dynamic duo consist of Róisín O and John Broe, both fantastic musicians and songwriters in their own right but together are creating something really special.

The pair started off writing together for what was intended to be some Róisín O solo material but upon realising their was an extra creative spark, ‘Thanks Brother’ was born. I’m very glad it was too.

‘We Caught It’ is the follow up to ‘We Are Different’, which I played on The London Ear in 2018, and was mixed and co-produced by Ruadhri Cushnan. Ruadhri has worked with Ed Sheeran, Mumford and Sons, The Maccabees and Eleanor McEvoy amongst others. But around my house, he’s known for working with George Michael on the vastly underrated Freeek!

The track beautifully ebbs and flows, reflective and euphoric at the same time. The production on ‘We Caught It’ highlights Róisín’s voice and there are some hints throughout that herald back to John Broe’s days in Miracle Bell, who, holding my hands up, I genuinely loved. Check out Love Sounds.

I’ll be honest, I’m a sucker for a good pop song but this is a great one and these two have a serious knack for bringing the best out of each other. They’ve also been writing for television and ad campaigns and co-writing with The Coronas on a bunch of singles.

I’ve another reason to choose this track. These pair went rogue at a Christmas party and filmed the video for the track on their iPhones. Guerrilla filmmaking at its best. Genius…

They’re off on tour in March, dates announced so far are:

Friday 15 March: Mc Gettigan’s Paddy’s Day Party, Dubai
Friday 22 March: De Barra’s, Clonakilty
Saturday 23 March: The Kasbah, Dolans Limerick
    Friday 29 March:St. Columb’s Hall Cinema, Derry
Thursday 9 May: Mike The Pie’s, Listowel

    Nessy Recommends // Ex:Re – Romance

Elena Tonra is best known as the vocalist from Daughter. The Londoner announced her self titled debut album under the moniker, Ex:Re, a couple of days before its release on November 30th.

The lead single from the album is ‘Romance’, an understated grower of a track that chronicles the start of a relationship while still burning with the embers from a previous one.

‘Romance’ sets the tone for what the rest of the post breakup album has to offer. A diary of self learning, grieving and contemplation. Lyrically, Tonra captures and lures the listener with honest storytelling and reflection. You feel her pain, her grief and this is musically backed up by the instrumentation of the track.

I really like this track and am looking forward to getting to know the album better.

Romance and Ex:Re’s album are available digitally now on 4AD & Glassnote Records.

Nessy Recommends // Lexxa – Get Out

‘Get Out’ is right up my street. Maude and Julia Morris produce music as Lexxa. They also happen to be twins which thanks to biology, makes for lovely harmonies.

‘Get Out’ has an eighties vibe that I adore. Those special little ‘pow pow’ percussive sounds, heavenly synths and guitar sounds are what my ears were made for.  The track builds and dips coming back to a huge choral refrain, which is a bit of an earworm. I’m not sure if these ladies have heard Shura’s music but theirs can slide right in alongside it in your record collection. It’s an absolute cracker.

‘Get Out’ is their second single and the follow up to ‘i got better friends now’ and the video was shot by Connor Pritchard.

Lexxa have been building a reputation in New Zealand and have been honing their craft including opening up for well known New Zealand and international touring acts as well as some shows in Australia. They’ve also been involved in a series of gigs run in at the Listen Showcase in Melbourne in June 2018.

LISTEN is a group who who promote the visibility and experiences of women, gender non-conforming and LGBTQIA+ people through live music showcase events.  Excellent work!
