The London Ear on RTÉ 2XM // Show 209 with David Turpin

I’ve been waiting ages to be able to do this interview.

The London Ear on RTÉ 2XM // Show 209 with David Turpin

David Turpin is the screenwriter of The Lodgers, the Irish film which has just become available on Netflix. Click the link to watch on Netflix. I was lucky enough to see the film in the picturehouse in Navan, Co. Meath on a trip back home in March and I’m delighted that everyone else can now have this opportunity.

The Lodgers was directed by Brian O’Malley and is a Gothic mystery starring the excellent Charlotte Vega with Bill Milner, Eugene Simon, Deirdre O’Kane, Moe Dunford, and David Bradley. The backdrop for the film is Ireland’s most haunted house, the stunning Loftus Hall in County Wexford. It was premiered at the Toronto Film Festival.

David Turpin is an extremely talented guy, he’s probably one of the most modest too and a genuine gentleman. It’s always a pleasure to chat to him.

David is also a fantastic musician and has a new album on the horizon. On the show, I played David’s first new music in five years, ‘Lucifer’, which features the vocals of Martin McCann of Sack and elevens.

A little snippet of trivia for you. David was the first person who I told I was thinking of calling the radio show ‘The London Ear’ when I moved to London. He thought it was great and Hey Presto!

You can find out more about David on his website, you can get his music on Bandcamp and listen on Spotify. You can also find him on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.

August is a weird kinda month here in London. Schools are off, lots of people are on holidays and out of town meaning commuting is a bit easier but then you also get lots of lots of tourists everywhere. Just like us, if we were off on our holibobs somewhere foreign.

The London Ear on RTÉ 2XM // Show 207 with Video Blue

So, I thought this was the perfect time to try something new out on The London Ear. A ‘soundtrack to someone’s life’ if you will. So I asked Jim O’Donoghue Martin, aka Video Blue, if he would like to choose the music on this week’s episode and then tell us why.

I truly was delighted with how this went. Thanks to Jim for so many things for this week’s episode. For being thoughtful and insightful, for being charming and so easy to get along to and also thanks for telling us about how ‘reviver’ came about.

‘reviver’ is a new ambient recording from Video Blue, ‘made in response to my own dealings with anxiety and panic attacks. When overwhelmed, listening to and creating sound helps’

Thank you so much for sharing.

You can find Video Blue on his website, on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram.  You can buy Reviver on Bandcamp and you can also listen on YouTube

What a show! I’m thrilled every week I get to do this. I love radio, I love being able to give a voice to passionate, talented people so I was delighted to be about to chat to actor, Stephen Bradley and to Christ from Limerick band, The Elation.

    Interview with Actor, Stephen Bradley

    Judgement - Stephen Bradley

I was delighted to get a tip off from an online friend about Stephen Bradley. Stephen is a London based, Irish actor and has been working on a series of warm up shows for this play ‘Judgement’ which he is bringing to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

It was lovely to speak to someone when you can hear the passion in their voice for what they do and a belief in their work. ‘Judgement’ is a one man show and Stephen spoke about the journey he has been through to get the play to where it is now.

“Judgement puts us face to face with one soldier’s reality and asks us to put his fate in our hands. Hear the facts laid bare in a stark account of what human survival in it’s darkest hour truly means.”

Best of luck in Edinburgh, Stephen!

Edit: There’s still time to catch one of the preview shows in Belfast on August 9. Check the details here

Judgement runs at Natural Food Kafe – Basement Room, 55 Clerk Street, Edinburgh. Playing nightly at 7:25PM, Sunday 19th – Saturday 25th August.

You can find out more about Stephen on his Facebook page and on Twitter.

I was joined on the show by Chris from The Elation. I’ve been playing their song XO for a while. They’ve just released an EP entitled ‘Clickbait’ and ‘Catch’ is the next single to be taken from that.

Another passionate guy on today’s show. Chris left university to play with The Elation full time! We chat about their formative time together, getting their sound and how the band came to London to record.
